A Career Documenting Millis Athletics

Ken Hamwey's connection to Millis athletics began in 1967 when his very first published story as a young journalist covered the Millis varsity football team. That article, written for the Framingham News (now Metrowest Daily News), launched a remarkable 54-year career that would see Hamwey become one of the most respected sports journalists in the region.

A unanimous choice of the selection committee, Hamwey was inducted as a contributor to the Hall of Fame on March 19, 2022, at the Medway VFW. At the ceremony, he was presented by Gordon Browne, a three-sport athlete at Millis High who became the first Tri-Valley League football player to be drafted into the National Football League, going in the second round to the Jets where he blocked for quarterback Joe Namath.

"I'm honored and humbled to be selected for induction into Millis' Hall of Fame. It's heart-warming to have a wonderful community like Millis recognize me for my reporting. Some of my fondest memories during a 54-year career involve Millis."

— Ken Hamwey

After six years in Framingham, Hamwey joined the Providence Journal, a four-time Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, where he spent the next 35 years. His early reporting ranged from high school and college sports to the professional beat, where he covered the Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots. He rose to become the paper's Night Sports Editor before retiring in 2008.

Recognition & Legacy

On Hamwey's last day at the Providence Journal, the Rhode Island State Senate read aloud a citation honoring his efforts and contributions to Rhode Island athletics. Two years later, in 2010, he received the MIAA's Distinguished Friend Award from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

At the Metrowest News, Hamwey wrote a popular weekly column called "Yesterday's Heroes" that focused on athletes' and coaches' past achievements. In 2007, he began covering sports for the Bellingham Bulletin as Sports Editor, where he launched a similar column called "Where Are They Now," reporting on former Bellingham athletes.

For Local Town Pages, where he has worked for over a decade, Hamwey continues to cover feature stories in semi-retirement, focusing on seven communities: Medway, Millis, Norfolk, Wrentham, Holliston, Natick, and Franklin. His dedication to documenting the achievements of local athletes and coaches has made him an invaluable chronicler of the region's athletic history.
